The Giver, by Lois Lowry

The Newbury Medal is awarded each year to the author for having written the most significant contribution to American literature for children. Essentially, this award is the top prize for authors of children’s novels, and Lois Lowry won this award for The Giver.

I read this aloud with my 6th reading grade class. At first, the story started out a bit slow. Then we were all fairly well-hooked and into the strange and different world that the author has created, a society of normalcy. By the end, we were really rooting for Jonas and couldn't wait to see how the story ended. In fact, many of my students wanted to take the book home over the weekend to finish on their own the last couple of chapters, which was cool.

The Giver is thought-provoking and intriguing, with a futuristic and communal setting that drives home the importance of individualism and free will, or does it not?  Imagine a perfectly created world without wars, pain, and suffering.  What expense would come from this?  You can’t have the good without the bad, right?

If science fiction is a genre that you enjoy or are new to, perhaps after reading The Hunger Games or the something similar, then The Giver might be a great book that you’d enjoy.  Plus, if you like this one, then you’ll be happy to know that this is the first of a four-book set.  Enjoy!

  1. The giver was a good book but at first it was kinda boring.I would deffinetly read the other books in the series.
The giver is about a boy named jonas and he lives in the land of Sameness and they all have no emotion and cant see any colors besides black, white and gray. Jonas got chosen to be the reciever and the reciever gets to experiance emotion and colors and will be able to experiance the good and bad things in life. Then he finds out that his father kills babies for living and runs away to save his friends and family. I would give this book 4 stars.

  2. The Giver by Lois Lowry. I rate this book a 3 1/2 because the beginning of the book it kind of left you hanging but then at the end it got better. The setting was futureistic comunity/town. The characters were Jonas, Lily, Gabe, Asher, Fiona, The Giver, mom, and dad. The problem of this story is, a kid named Jonas gets asingned a job that only 2 people has\d before, called the reciever. Which is really close to the Giver. Jonas is suppost to have all day classes with the Giver. But one day Jonas decides that he is going to run away with gabe to get out of his town. I really liked this book.

  3. Hi, my name is Dominic, and I'm doing a book review on "The Giver." I personally did not really like this book, it was just so confusing! It was mainly about people who were color blind, except this one little charming boy named Jonas. He can see color when everyone else can't. I DON'T GET THAT!!!!! When he was 11 he could only see red, once again, I don't know what that is! Then he turned 13, and his dreams transfered into his life of not seeeing colors, then he started to see colors. Okay, THAT IS HUMINLY IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! Well, I did not like this book and quite frankly never will.

  5. I read The Giver by Lois Lowry. The genre of this book is science fiction. The setting of the book is in a futuristic community town with some strange and strict rules. The main characters in this book ar Jonaas, The Giver, Gabrielle, Asher, Fiona and a couple more. The plot or problem in this book is everything is the same, feelings, color, etc. This book has won a Newbery award. If I was to rate this book 1-5 stars, I'd give it a 4 because I wasn't always into the book.

  6. The Giver is a Exciting, amazing, and great book. The Giver starts off in a world of gray, where everyone has to do the same thing everyday. Once a year there is a ceremony for each age group untill 12, Jonas got a special job that no one can know. he can't even tell his parents. On one night he does something he could never do......leave. This story is exciting and action packed that i recomend to everyone. I hope you enjoied it as much as I did.

  7. zachary.w/ The Giver is a pordel to a down graded futuris. The genre is a syfy. The futuristic world that the Giver tells about is a world with out colors, feeling, or family. The problem starts after jonas becomes the resever of menorys. The Giver give jonas menorys that lets him feel feelings, see colors, and feel pane. And his friends don't no the thing that jonas feels. lastly the child that his father is caring for is going to be relest. that worse thing is that he knows what a relest is(deaf). Book by Lois Lowry. I give it 4 stars.

  8. I read the book the Giver by Lois Lowry and it was science fiction. The setting was futuristic town The main characters are Jonas, the Giver, Gabrielle, Asher, and Fiona. The problem is everyone has no feelings and only can see black and white. It is a weird life it almost seems like everybody is the same but at different ages. I give this book 4 starts because of the slow beginning.

  9. This book was one of the best storys I have ever read. The main character in this story is Jonas. When we were on the rising action it started to get a little strang. Jonas got skiped over for his job,so he ask the Elders. They said he was picked to be the Recevier. The Receiver can recevie memorys from the Giver.

  10. The Giver is a science fiction book. It's really cool. The setting was in the future in a community where there was no color or anything, it was lame! There werew a bunch of characters, like Asher and Fiona, Jonas' parents. But the most important characters are Gabe, The Giver, and Jonas. I am not a big fan of this book because it's all lame, but most kids in my class like the book. I would rate the book 3 out of stars.

  13. The Giver was a good book i would give it 3 1/2. the reason i gave 3 1/2 is because its confusing but there are series. So its going to be confusing intell you read the last book. Any was the setting was abouut futurisstic comutiy. The town seemed boring to live in. YOu could not see colors and you dont memory. There are seven characters in this book and they are lily , joans , fiona, mother , father , gabe , and the giver. The problem in this story is that Jonas ran away ,and fround out that his dad kills babys because thats his job. I kind of liked the book

  15. The Giver, by Lois Lowry, was an okay book. The genre of the book is science fiction. Some of the characters are Jonas, Fiona, Asher, Rosemary, Jonas' parents, and The Giver. The book was about a giver and a receiver of memories, and the setting takes place in a too normal community. I would give this book one star because it is a bit sad what the people do in the community when they release babies and the old people.

  16. I read The giver by Lois Lowry. It was one of my favorite books that aren't in a series. This is the plot of the book.
It is about a boy named Jonas who is selected to be the next Receiver of memories. Jonas prepares to be ready to be up for the challenge but, can he. It is a realistic fiction book.I liked it was very interesting subject . I didn't like it because it was 180 pages which is short for me.
I give this a 4.5 star rating as a book. It was very hard put down at some pats. I hope you enjoy it if you read it.
